FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT Heavy bleeding and abdominal pain are common complaints from women with fibroids. Uterine fibroids are one of the most common, non-cancerous gynecologic problems affecting women ages 35 to 55. The usual treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids is surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) or of the fibroid tumors. A new procedure called uterine artery embolization or fibroid embolization is being offered by interventional radiologists as an alternative to surgery. "Embolization halts the heavy bleeding and pain associated with fibroids without invasive surgery" according to Dr. Greben, an interventional radiologist at the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, one of only a handful of medical centers in this country performing the procedure. This new and exciting procedure for women is performed by interventional radiologists, only requires an overnight hospital stay, and preserves a women's uterus while treating the underlying condition. |
